The Government of India (GoI) supported the NUTP through various schemes for pedestrianization, cycling andcity bus improvements. The schemes for city bus improvements mainly consisted of funding of buses by the centralgovernment for selected cities. The bus funding led to an addition of more than 24,000 buses by 64 selected cities.Unfortunately, while funding bus transport, GOI also created other parallel schemes that reduced taxes for privatevehicles and supported metro rail as the preferred mass transit option. Improvements in bus ridership were seen inmany cities where additional buses were introduced, however the scheme had mixed success (Caur, 2016) comparedto the expectations set forth during planning stage of the scheme.
