Use of botulinum toxin type A in patients with spasticity after Cerebral Vascular Disease (CVD)

A longitudinal study was conducted to assess functional capacity in a group of patients with spasticity post Cerebral Vascular Disease (CVD) receiving rehabilitation treatment and botulinum toxin type A, treated at the Spasticity Clinic of “Dr. Alejandro Rhode” Rehabilitation National Center, during the period October 2008 - September 2009. Each patient was evaluated at baseline and after treatment (a month and a half to three months), by survey, clinical evaluation and Functional Independence scale (FIM). 21 patients, 5 females (23.8%) and 16 men (76.2%) aged 27 to 82 years were evaluated. Of an average of 47 points on the FIM scale before the dose of toxin, the average value up to 74 points in month and a half and to 105 after 3 months. In conclusion, we demonstrated an improvement in functional capacity of patients with spasticity post-CVD after rehabilitation treatment and application of botulinum toxin.
