Hiatus hernia is an acquired condition, most frequently diagnosed by endoscopic means. It presents as asymptomatic or with symptoms mainly due to gastroesophageal reflux (GER). Complications can be either secondary to acid reflux or incarceration of the stomach in the chest, and can compromise the patient′s life. Objective: To report the case of a female patient of 53 years of age, bearer of a hiatal hernia. Method: Description of the case report and review of the literature. Setting: Department of Surgery. Hospital Universitario Dr. Luis Razetti. Barcelona. Anzoátegui State. Results: The operative cure of hiatal hernia by Belsey Mark IV technique. Conclusion: The medical management is the first option, mainly aimed at controlling the manifestations of gastroesophageal reflux, surgery should be reserved for cases that do not respond to medical management, that show the presence of complications, large hiatus hernias or Paraesophageal.
