Evaluation of Crystalluria in the Population Attending a Clinical Laboratory (UNIDEME)

The analysis of crystalluria, calciuria and uricosuria in the urine sediment, can be very useful in the study of patients with urinary stones, as nephrolithiasis is a condition that is caused by urinary oversaturation. Because it is not known the exact relationship between crystalluria and nephrolithiasis, the objective of this study was to determine whether there was any association between the number of crystals and: age, sex, urinary pH and urinary density of a population that attends a clinical laboratory. A relationship was found between different types of crystals and the parameters evaluated, there was increased production of crystals at early ages. Excretion of amorphous phosphate crystals (74.07%) was higher in females, and urate ammonium crystals (85.71%) were observed exclusively in males. Increased formation of crystals was observed in relatively acidic pH (between 5 and 6), with the exception of amorphous phosphate crystals that were observed in relatively alkaline pH (pH = 8). In regard to urinary density, most crystals were observed at normal urinary densities (1.010-1.025 mg / ml), with the exception of amorphous phosphate crystals that were observed in dilute urine (51.8%). These results could be useful in preventing or correcting certain factors predisposing to urinary stones.
