Development of Industry-focused, Life Cycle Assessment Enhanced Eco-Design Software

In order to effectively contribute to reaching the ambitious targets for a sustainable world (e.g. set through the Sustainable Developments Goals of the United Nations) industries require cost-effective means to improve the sustainability of their products and operations. Therefore, the ongoing “Project to Lead Eco-Design Integration in Aerospace Development & Engineering Systems” (PLEIADES) develops industry-focused Eco-Design tools that support real aerospace engineering workflows. The paper introduces the PLEIADES approach to support development teams in taking a combined view of engineering, environmental, and business aspects from the early design stages to subsequent phases. Moreover, the key methodologies implemented in the PLEIADES software solutions are introduced. Furthermore, the general applicability of the PLEIADES sustainability approach and tools for the development of complex products beyond the aerospace sector is highlighted.
