One of the issues brought to the forefront by the health care reform debatewas the fact that prior to 2010, thirty percent of young adults were uninsuredin the United States.' Usually, once children entered college or ceased to bedependents of their parents, many health insurance providers removed theseyoung adults from their parents' policies. Prior to 2010, this action resultedin about one in five of the total population uninsured. Furthermore, in thecurrent uncertain economy, this group often lacks coverage due tounemployment or limited employer-sponsored health benefits.4 One in sixyoung adults suffer from a chronic illness, and nearly half of uninsuredyounF adults are experiencing difficulties with paying off their medicalbills.
