A Decade after the Women's Health Initiative—The Experts Do Agree

Breast cancer. An increased risk of breast cancer is seen with 5 years or more of continuous estrogen with prog- estogen therapy, possibly earlier with continuous use since menopause. The risk is real but not great, and the risk decreases after hormone therapy is discontinued. Use of estrogen alone for a mean of 7 years in the Women’s Health Initiative did not increase the risk of breast cancer.
