Fullerenes were first reported in 1985 and several new avenues in this domain are discussed in this article, such as the control of stereoselectivity and chirality in these materials via asymmetric metal catalysis, which results in enhanced scope of applications in the biomedical and material area; the construction of versatile carbon-based nanosized supramolecular materials using fullerenes as hosts; and the use of glycodendrofullerenes as potential antiviral agents by facilitating blockage of the receptor of DCSIGN, which is the target of virus such as Ebola and HIV on the surface of cells. This article provides additional insights into each of these topics.
