High Temperature Materials Corrosion Challenges for Energy Conversion Technologies

High temperature corrosion refers to the chemical attack of solid functional or structural materials operating at elevated temperatures, resulting in degradation of essential properties. Many energy conversion technologies operate at high temperatures where oxidation/corrosion driving forces can be large and where the degradation reaction kinetics are fast. The thermodynamics and kinetics of reactions between components and the surrounding environment within the energy conversion system must be considered to predict system lifetime. Thermochemical data are needed to predict material lifetimes in the extreme environments of high temperature energy conversion technologies. The challenges related to high temperature corrosion in energy conversion is further discussed in this article.
