摘要

Solar power is an omnipresent and ubiquitous form of natural energy that has tremendous potential. Harnessing solar energy has been a well-meaning intent of mankind since ages and continues to be an attractive option for meeting our ever increasing energy needs. Among the different forms of solar energy used today photovoltaic technologies are at the forefront. Beginning with silicon solar cells which largely represent first generation photovoltaics, the area has exploded into a full-fledged field. The second and third generation cells comprise of several new material classes vying for attention and offering tantalizing possibilities. These include (and not limited to) organic dyes, quantum dots, polymers, and organic perovskites. State-of-art research in all of these areas has now made it possible to produce electricity economically and look at the commercial potential of many of these material classes. With global climate change a reality, it is imperative that these technologies are fostered and adapted universally for a sustainable future.
