Protecting structures from corrosion is an important challenge in engineering. Cathodic protection using sacrificial anodes is usually applied to many structures to mitigate corrosion. Predictions of corrosion rates of structures and the design of cathodic protection systems have been traditionally based on empiricism. This article outlines the use of the Bayesian estimation method to rationally predict corrosion rates in systems of interest. The use of the boundary element method to predict corrosion rates is explained, followed by the use of an inverse analysis method to identify the corrosion current from the measured potential distribution around large structures. The mathematical modeling aspects are brought out in detail in both instances. Experimental validation and practical application of these methods in a case study are also described.
