The Role of Nurses in Massive Transfusion

The situations in which massive transfusions are indicated are usually fraught with stress. This stress is compounded, as many hospitals do not have clear guidelines regarding administration of blood products or the monitoring of patients receiving massive transfusions. The nurse plays a critical role in the management of a massive transfusion, both directly related to the transfusion and also in coordinating the administration of the blood products and the identification of the complications of a massive transfusion.
