Social competences of health service workers. Pilot study

Introduction: A range of skills and competences are needed to take care of a sick person, and social co mpetences seem to be as important as professional co mpetences in relat ions wit h the pat ient. Goo d relations o f health service wo rkers with a patient, to a large extent, det ermine the quality and effect iveness of treat ment. Purpose: To determine t he level o f social co mpetences o f health service workers. Materials and methods: Forty health service wo rkers - docto rs, nurses, and midwives - were included in the stud y. We used the Social Competence Quest ionnaire (SCQ). Results: The majo rity of the subjects demonstrated an average increase in the competences co nditioning effective actio n in intimat e sit uations, situations of social exposure, and situations requiring assert iveness. Conclusions: Given the importance of social co mpetences in t he diagnosis pro cess, treatment, and occupational functio ning o f health service workers, it seems appropriate to improve and develop t hem
