Modeling of process deflections in a point-based grinding simulation system

In the aerospace industry, surface topographies resulting from grinding processes are a major quality feature of the produced parts. Simulation systems using point clouds for modeling individual grains are a flexible solution to predict these topographies and the process forces, taking several effects into account, e.g., the wear of the grains. The resulting surface topographies are additionally influenced by process deflections. In this paper, an extension of a point-based geometric physically-based grinding simulation is presented, which allows modeling the influence of process deflections. Experiments were conducted in order to validate the model by comparing the resulting workpiece surfaces to the simulation results.
