Depression in Parkinson's disease.

Depression is a frequent comorbid disorder of Parkinson's disease; however, little is known about its pathomechanisms. Althoughdepression is an important factor negatively affecting the quality of life of parkinsonian patients, it often remains undiagnosed andtherefore untreated. Furthermore, antidepressant therapy is problematic because of the need to combine antidepressant drugs withantiparkinsonian treatments. The present paper gives an overview of characteristic features of Parkinson's disease-associated de-pression, experimental studies on its animal models, potential mechanisms involved in its occurrence and possible strategies fortreatment
