Carbonate reservoirs in Western China show tremendousexploration and development potential. These have becomethe key area for oil and gas reserves addition and sustainableresource development for China. Compared to conventionalcarbonate reservoirs, prediction of this kind of reservoirpredominated by secondary storage is much more difficultand presents significant challenges. Seismic detection ofdissolution pores and fractures always requires a highstandard of technology, which puts further serious challengeson exploration and creates many technological issues forfield development plans. The key geophysical problems aretackled based on a detailed analysis of exploration issuesfor such complex carbonate reservoirs. Subsequently, a setof techniques for complex carbonate reservoir predictionwas established, including pre-stack amplitude-preservedprocessing, new rock physics models, pre-stack AVOinversion, seismic multi-attribute optimization and integratedprediction, fracture detection using pre-stack data with limitedazimuthal distribution and fl uid identifi cation based on prestackinversion. Additionally, to solve some special problems,diffraction wave fi eld separation and imaging, nonstationarydeconvolution algorithms are also developed and employed.Moreover, application of this set of techniques to field datahas proven to be effective and feasible and drilling resultsshow good agreement with our research. Nevertheless, thefi eld is still in its infancy.
