Weproposedandnumericallyinvestigatedanoveltwo-dimensional(2D)photoniccrystal(PhC)-basedpolarizationsplitter.ItwasdemonstratedthatbyintroducingsingleairholedefectintothePhCstructure,alowcross-talkpolarizationsplittercanberealizedwithsignificantlyminimizedreflectionoccurringattheinterfacebetweenthedielectricmaterialandair.Foranoperatingwavelengthof1.55micro;m,anextinctionratiohigherthan15dBhasbeenachievedinthisstudy.Thelowcross-talkfeaturetogetherwiththehightoleranceofthevariationinthesizeoftheairholearraysmakethedeviceproposedsuitablefortheintegratedopticalcircuits.
