Surface treatments that are required to achieve polystyrene surface suitable for cell culture applications were performed using an atmospheric pressure dielectric barrier discharge generated in helium. Short time plasma treatments affected the polystyrene surface hydrophobicity and surface free energy due to insertion of oxygen-containing polar groups such as -OH, -COOH as proofed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. These changes in surface properties were studied in relation to cellular behavior of human keratinocytes (HaCaT) in vitro and in serum-free medium conditions. Plasma treated polystyrene surfaces promoted cell growth in culture, after several hours.
