The International Carbon Credit Market: A Comparative Study Between the Regulated and Voluntary Markets the Period 2004 to 2011

The general objective of this research is to investigate the main differences between the regulated and voluntary carbon markets in Brazil, over the period from 2004 to 2011. In order to achieve the proposed objective, we conducted exploratory bibliographic research, which contributed to an understanding of the object investigated, as well as documental research, which utilized content analysis techniques to collect secondary data obtained from Project Design Documents (PDDs). This data was mapped and extracted from the websites and databases we visited, which enabled the collection of quantitative and qualitative data. Furthermore, we mapped voluntary carbon market projects through a search of the databases and institutional websites of International Standards and their applicants, while projects from the regulated carbon market were extracted from the existing databases of the Ministry of Science and Technology (Ministério da Ciência e Tecnologia: MCT). We verified differences and similarities between the regulated and voluntary carbon markets in Brazil up to that point in time, according to which the former had 499, while the latter had 111. We identified that the main differences between the regulated and carbon markets in Brazil are in their sectoral scopes.↓Essa pesquisa teve como objetivo geral investigar as principais diferen?as entre o mercado de carbono regulado e voluntário no Brasil, no período de 2004 a 2011. Para alcan?ar o objetivo proposto, realizou-se uma pesquisa exploratória, de caráter bibliográfica, que contribuiu para conhecer o objeto investigado, como também a realiza??o de pesquisa documental com a utiliza??o de técnicas de análise de conteúdo para coletar os dados secundários obtidos através dos Documentos de Concep??o dos Projetos (DCPs) mapeados e extraídos dos sites e banco de dados visitados, que permitiu a coleta de dados quantitativos e qualitativos. Além disso, realizou-se o mapeamento de projetos no mercado de carbono voluntário no Brasil por meio de busca em bancos de dados e sites institucionais dos Padr?es Internacionais e dos proponentes, enquanto que os projetos do mercado de carbono regulado foram extraídos do banco de dados já existente no site do Ministério da Ciência e Tecnologia (MCT). Verificam-se diferen?as e semelhan?as entre os mercados de carbono regulado e voluntário no Brasil, estando o primeiro mercado com 499 projetos, enquanto o segundo possui 111 projetos até o momento. Identificou-se que est?o nos escopos setoriais as principais diferen?as entre os mercados de carbono regulado e voluntário no Brasil.
