Prevalência de Anemia Ferropriva em Candidatos a Doa??o de Sangue do Servi?o de Hemoterapia da Cidade de Concórdia - SC no Mês de Junho de 2009

Blood has been used for a long time as a therapeutic resource and based on this, the number of blood donors has increased progressively during the last years. Blood donation results in loss of iron in each collection procedure. Therefore, it is necessary to take special care before and after the transfusion procedures. This study assessed the prevalence of iron deficiency anemia through hematocrit concentration and iron determination in 60 medical records of blood donation candidates, age 18 or older, at the Hemotherapy center in the City of Concordia, SC, Brazil. Data were collected and tabulated in the month of June/2009. Iron deficiency anemia has its origins in the lack of iron in the body, and this is verified by examining the hematocrit rate and iron determination. In this study, the prevalence of anemia was not verified in the blood donation candidates under research. However, deficiency of iron was verified, which might have been caused by blood collection.
