Cytostatic Activity of Viscum album L. Extract Processed by Microfiltration and Ultrafiltration

The aim of this paper consists in ‘non-stressing’ process’ use that, with respect to traditional plants operates under milder temperature conditions. Particular attention was devoted to investigate the possibility to purify and concentrate Viscum album extracts with a microfiltration/ultrafiltration unit, allowing the preservation of thermolabile compounds from the extracts and their antineoplastic properties examination. In vitro investigation of the HeLa cancerous cells interaction with biopreparations (extracted, separated and purified from Viscum album through successive ultrafiltrations on membranes) highlighted and quantified their cytostatic and cytotoxic impact, expressed by the inhibition of protein synthesis and cellular proliferation, by cell viability decrease and by the inhibition of cell cultures development.
