Cracow was founded in the 7th–8th century and its great development began in 1039 when the city became the capital of Poland. The university later known as the Jagiellonian University was founded in 1364 and its Medical Faculty was a leading university medical school in the history of Poland. The list of Cracow physicians who have contributed to the development of world medicine includes Józef Stru?, Józef Dietl, Edward Korczyński, Walery Jaworski, Ludwik Rydygier, Tadeusz Browicz, Leon Konrad Gliński, Odo Bujwid, Napoleon Cybulski and Adolf Beck.
