MRI features and categories of neurobrucellosis: A pooled review

Objective To analyze the MRI manifestations of neurobrucellosis, summarize the MRI features, and try to classify them, in order to improve the understanding of MRI manifestations of neurobrucellosis. Methods Case reports or clinical analysis of neurobrucellosis with MRI features were reviewed, and the manifestations and types of MRI were summarized. Results According to the electronic data retrieval, 21 references with detailed MRI description of the neurobrucellosis were extracted, including 95 cases in total. The age range was 8–68 years old, male 72 cases (75.8%), female 23 cases (24.2%). Of the 72 patients who had detailed age data, 6 cases (8.3%) were below 20 years, 54 cases (75%) between 20 and 40 years, 12 (16.7%) over 40 years old. According to the characteristics of MRI features, NB were mainly divided into five classifications: 29 (30.5%) cases of meningitis (I), 26 (27.4%) cases of meningoencephalitis (II), 24 (25.3%) cases of demyelinating type (III), 8 (8.4%) cases of abscess type (IV), 8 (8.4%) cases of pseudotumor type (V). Conclusion The location and manifestation of brucellosis neuropathic on MRI can be divided into five types. It is helpful to understand the types correctly for clinical diagnosis.
