Ya B Zeldovich was a pre-eminent Soviet physicistwhose seminal contributions spanned manyˉelds ranging from physical chemistry to nuclearand particle physics, and ˉnally astrophysics andcosmology. This article attempts to convey someof the zest with which he did science and the importantrole he played in fostering and mentoringa whole generation of talented Soviet scientists.
