Goat breeding in Lubumbashi (DRC): 2. Local kids pre and post weaning growth analysis

Astudywasconductedonpreandpost-weaninggrowthoflocalkidsintwofarmsnearLubumbashi,Katanga,DRC.Beforeweaningat90days,on116birthsrecordedfor83farrowing,62.7%oflittersweresimple,34.9%doubleand2.40%triple.Theaveragelittersizewas1.42with1.49inrainyseasonand1.34inthedryseason.Thepre-weaningaveragemortalitywas14.65%with23.40%formultiplebirthsand3.90%forsingle.Theaverageweightwas1.75±0.46kg(n=245)atbirthand7.14±2.04kg(n=228)atweaning.Averagedailygain(ADG)ing/daywasabout83.49±36.27between0and30daysand46.96±25.79between31and90days.Duringpost-weaningperiod(n=218),theaverageliveweightat180days(6months)variedaccordingtosex,littersizeandseason;Theleastsquaresmeanrangedfrom8.20±0.28to8.22±0.25and8.68±0.25to9.46±0.25kgforthemaleandfemalegoats.At270days(9months)averageliveweightwas10.29±0.26and11.08±0.25kgrespectivelyforfemalesandmales.ADGrangedrespectivelyfrom23.73±2.62to36.53±2.57g/dbetween3and6months;17,93±4.45to26.26±3.92g/dfrom6to9months;itvariedaccordingtotheseasonandespeciallytheliveweightatweaning(6to9months).Theselectionwouldbemosteffectivein30-90daysand6-9monthsinmalesand3monthsand6-9monthsinfemales.
