Socioeconomic and technical investigation on family poultry in the Adamawa region of Cameroon

AtechnicalandsocioeconomicfamilypoultrysurveyhasbeenconductedfromJulytoaugust2014,inthe8districtsofVinadepartment,AdamawaregionofCameroon.TheobjectiveistocontributetothedevelopmentoffamilypoultryinthenorthernregionofCameroon.Tothisend,85villagepoultrybreedersholdingatotalof2599birdsweresurveyed.nbsp;Thebirdsarepredominantly(85%)heldbymen.Chickensaccountfornearly76%ofpoultry,followedbyducks(18%).Thisactivityischaracterizedbythestrayingofanimals;however,66%offarmershaveanightshelterfortheirbirds.Feedingisnotsuppliedbyfarmersin95%ofcase.Noprophylacticmeasureistakenbythemajority(64%)ofpoultrybreeders,whichtranslatesintoannualmortalityrangingfrom50to100%ofbirdsin78%ofpoultryfarms.Mortalitiesaremainly(98.5%)attributedtodiseases.Thelocalpoultrybusinessisverypromising;henscostbetween2000and3000FCFAperunitwhileroostersaresoldfor3000to7000FCFAperunit.Thisactivitycontributesin80%ofhomeownersbetween20and80%offamilyresponsibilities.Diseases,lackofsupervisionandfinancialresourcesarethemainconstraintsinthesector.Complaintsissuedforthedevelopmentofthesectoraretraining,monitoringanddiseasespreventionanderadication.
