AstudywascarriedoutatCanthoUniversityfromMarchtoJune1997todetermineeffectsoffoliageofSesbaniagrandiflora,Leucaenaleucocephala,Hibiscusrosa-sinensisandCeibapentadraonintake,digestionandrumenenvironmentofgrowinggoats.Thedesignusedfourgoats(10-12kgliveweight)inaLatinsquarearrangementoffourtreatments(thetreefoliages)with21dayperiods.nbsp;Feedintake,totalfaecalandurineoutputwererecordedduringthelastfifteendaysofthestudyperiod.Onthelastdayofeachperiod,rumenfluidwasobtainedwithastomachtubebeforeand4hoursafteroffereingfeedinthemorning.Intakeoffreshfoliagewassimilar(P=0.24)onalltreatmentsbutdrymatterandcrudeproteinintakesdifferedsignificantly(P=0.001)withhighestvaluesforSesbania,followedbyLeucaena,CeibaandHibiscus.Apparentdrymatterdigestibilitycoefficientswere74.8,75.9,68.0and76.0%fornbsp;Sesbania,Leucaena,HibiscusandCeiba,respectively,anddidnotdifferbetweenfoliages.Thereweresignificantdifferences(P=0.038)inapparentdigestibilityofcrudeproteinwithlowervaluesforHibiscusandCeiba(50.5and49.3%)comparedwithSesbaniaandLeucaena(63.7andnbsp;66.5%).Feeddrymatterintakewashighlycorrelated(R2=0.86)withintakeofcrudeprotein.nbsp;Changesinliveweightwere143,80,51and74g/day(P=0.067)forSesbania,Leucaena,HibiscusandCeiba,respectively.RumenammonialevelsandprotozoalcountsafterfeedingwerehigherforSesbaniaandLeucaenathanfortheothertwofoliages.ItisconcludedthatthefoliageofSesbaniagrandifloraandLeucaenaleucocephalahasahigherfeedingvalueforgoatsthanthatfromCeibapentadraandHibiscusrosa-sinensis,butthatallfourfoliageswillprovidemorethanmaintenanceneedsforgrowinggoats.
