Responses of four varieties of sugar cane to planting distance and mulching

Theexperimentwascarriedoutin1994and1995attheGoatandRabbitResearchCentreinBavidistrict,whichisahillyareainNorthVietnam.ThetreatmentswerearrangedinaLatinsquaresplit-plotdesign,andincludedfourvarieties:Hoanam,POJ3016,F156,My55-14andtwoplantingdistances:90cmor150cmbetweenrows.Treatmentswithdeadleavesincludedmulchingandno-mulching.Sugarcanewasharvestedat10and12monthsafterplanting.Aftertwoyearstheresultsshowedthat:varietiesF156,HoanamandMy55-14producedsignificantlymoreediblebiomassthanthetraditionalvarietyPOJ30-16,whichhasbeenplantedforalongtimeinBavidistrict.Therewerenoadvantagesinyieldnorinfeedvaluewhensugarcanewasharvestedat10comparedwith12months.Returningthedeadleavestothesoilincreasedyieldsofediblebiomass,theamountofcarbonsequesteredinsoil,andthegrowthratesofmaizeplantedinsoilsamplesfromtheexperimentalplotsafterharvest.Narrowingtherowdistancefrom150to90cmledtoincreasesinbiomassyieldwithoutaffectingbrixorextractionrateofthejuice.Returningthedeadleavestothesoil,decreasingtherowdistanceandselectionofnewlyintroducedsugarcanevarietiesaremanagementpracticeswhichcanberecommendedtofarmersintheBaviarea.
