Effect of weaning on postpartum reproductive performance of Murrah buffaloes

Thepresentstudywascarriedouttoevaluatetheeffectofweaningofcalvesonresumptionofovariancyclicityandfertilityresponseinpostpartumbuffaloes.Atotalof16Murrahbuffaloeswereselectedaspertheirduedateofcalvingandrandomlydividedintotwoequalgroupsi.e.GroupS(Suckling)andGroupW(Weaned).Theanimalsintheweaninggroup(n=8)wereisolatedfromtheircalvesbyday3aftercalvingandanimalsinsuckling(n=8)groupwereallowedtosuckletwicedaily.Changesintheprogesteroneconcentrationwereusedtoassesstheresumptionofovariancyclicity.ThepostpartumintervaltoresumptionofovariancyclicityweresimilarforSandWgroups(26.0±0.0vs.27.8±1.81days;P0.05).However,theintervalfromcalvingtotheonsetofbehaviouraloestruswassignificantly(P0.01)shorterinWthanS(53.3±7.52vs.128.0±9.94days).SignificantlymoreincidenceofsilentovulationwasobservedinWthanSbuffaloes(75%vs.12.5%;P0.01).MorethanhalfofanimalsinWconceivedbefore90dayspostpartumcomparedtononeinS(62.5%vs.0.0%,P0.01).FirstserviceconceptionrateinWwasslightlygreaterthaninS(28.6%vs.25.0%).Fromthepresentstudy,itcanbeconcludedthatweaningacceleratesresumptionofovariancyclicityandenhancesconceptionrateinMurrahbuffaloes.Thepresentfindingsindicatedthatweaningcouldbearationalmanagementstrategyforreducingthepostpartumanoestrusbyearlierresumptionofreproductivefunctioninbuffaloes.nbsp;
