Design, construction and evaluation of a tunnel shed for pigs on a small scale farm in central Mexico

Initiallydesignedandbuiltahoopbarnwithpolyvinylwithgroundfloorceilingforagroupof48pigsonafarminasmallscalefarmincentralMéxico.Thesecondstagemadeacomparisonbetweenpigshousedinhoopbarn(CT)withtheconventionalbarnexistingonthefarm(CC).ForCT48sevenweeksoldpigswerestayedinasinglegroup.ForCCstayed16pigsinthreepensconfinedinacementfloorpen.Variablestoevaluatewere:initialweightto49days,weightsto77,105,133and168days,generalaveragedailygain,averagedailygainineachweighing,andbackfatat168days.Alsofoundthecostofconstruction,thecostofproductionbypigandkg.WefoundthatenvironmentalconditionswithinCTpromotedtheincreaseintheamountofdustandmoistureinthesoilwhilenotcorrectlyhandlingtheventilation.ProductionvariableshadnodifferencesbetweenCTandCC,exceptfortheADGwhereweredifferencesforCTat105dandforCCat168days(P0.05).Thecostofproductionbypigwas$136.9USDforCTand$135.9USDforCC,outputperkgcostwas$1.46USD$1.40USDforCCtoCC.CTconstructioncostwas$2966.6$andconstructioncostbypigwas$67.4USD.
