Chemical composition variability of main grazed plants by the dromedary in the Southwestern of Algeria

ThestudyofthechemicalcompositionofthemainplantsgrazedbydromedarynamelyCalligonumcosmosum,Cyperusconglomeratus,Danthoniafragilis,Gymnocarposdecander,Panicumturgidum,Pithoranthuschloranthus,Retamaretama,Stipagrostispungens,TamarixgallicaandTraganumnudatum,nbsp;collectedwithindifferentrangelandsoftheAlgerianWesternSahara,showsahighvariabilityamongthedifferentspecies.ThehighesttotalnitrogenousmattervaluewasrecordedintheRtam(Retamaretama).Thisspeciesisabundantinsandypastures.Itisreputedtobepoisonoustosheepandcaprineraces,thoughitisgrazedbydromedaryincertainconditions.Onthecontrary,thelowestvaluewasrecordedinPanicumturgidum,abundantspeciesinAcaciaradianawadis.However,themostappreciatedplantspresenthighvaluesincrudecelluloseandlowonesintotalnitrogen.Indeed,thefoodmodeandtheselectionofnourishingplantsbythedromedaryarebasedonfoodchemicalcomposition,thephenologicalstageoftheplant,theseasonandthefloristiccompositionofrangelands.
