Fifty-sixcrossbredpigswereusedintwoexperimentstoevaluatechoppedwholesugarcanestalkasthebasaldiet.InExperiment1thetreatmentsweredifferentcombinationsoffishmeal,soyabeanmealandmeatmealwithchoppedcaneat17%(freshbasis)ofliveweight;inExperiment2differentofferlevelsofchoppedcanewerecompared(17,14,10and6%ofliveweight)withthesameproteinsupplement.Estimatesweremadeofsugarextractionratebyapplyingcoefficientsfor?Brix(totalsugars)andthedrymattercontentofthestalkresidue,afterithadbeenchewed,determinedbySarria(1996)(SarriaPatricia,personalcommunication).InExperiment1growthratesfrom420to580g/daywereobtainedonthechoppedcanestalkwhensoyabeanorfishmealweretheproteinsources;thecontrolpigs(onmaize-soyabeanmeal)grewat650g/day.Theextractionrateofsugarbythepigswasestimatedtobe67%resultinginadailysugarintakeofabout1kg.InExperiment2,growthratedecreasedlinearlyastheofferlevelofcanestalkwasreduced(from441to237g/day)butsugarextractionrateincreasedfrom67%atthe17%offerlevelto84%onthelowestlevel(6%ofliveweight).
