Effect of replacing whole boiled soybeans with duckweed (Lemna sp) in the diets of growing ducks

ThisfeedingtrialwascarriedouttodeterminetheeffectoffeedingDuckweed(Lemnasp)aspartialreplacementoftheproteininboiledsoyabeansgivenasproteinsupplementtosugarcanejuiceformeatducks.Theexperimentaldesignforthetrialswasfivetreatments,fourreplications(pens)and10birdsperpen.Diets,containingfivelevelsofcrudeprotein,whichwereformulatedfromboiledsoyabeansandDuckweed(Lemnasp),withsugarcanejuiceadlibitumastheenergysource,werefedto200CherryValleyHybridgrowingducks.Therationswerefedfromonemonthofageuntilthebirdsreached70daysofage,whentwoducks(onemaleandonefemale)perpenwereslaughteredforcarcassevaluation.Dailyintakesofdrymatterandcrudeproteindecreasedsignificantlywithdecreasingsoyabeansupply,astherewerenocorrespondingincreasesinDuckweedintake.Dailygainsdecreasedlinearlyandfeedconversionratioincreased(P0.001)withdecreasingsoyabeansupply.Carcasstraitswerenotaffectedbytreatment.
