InthisstudyweexaminedthebeneficialeffectofdietarySaccharomycescerevisiaesupplementationonbodyweight,bodyconditionscore,milkproductionandcompositionandbloodparametersinpre-andpostpartumdairycowsinAlgeria.Startingat2weeksprepartumandendingat7weekspostpartum,twogroupsof10dairycowswerefedwitheitherabasaldietorsupplementedwith10g/d/cowofSaccharomycescerevisiae(i.e.2.1010CFU/d/cow).Weperformedalongitudinalfollow-uptomeasuremilkproduction,bodyweightandperformanceandbiochemicalparametersofblood.nbsp;Wefoundthatadditionofyeasttodiethassignificantlyincreasedmilkproductionduringthefirst7weeksoflactation(byabout2l/d/cow).Thecompositionofmilkremainedunchangedcomparedthatfromcontrolanimals.InadditionwefoundthatSaccharomycescerevisiae-treatedanimalshadanimprovedpostpartumbodycondition(+20%)associatedwithlesslossofbodyweightaftercalving.Moreover,systemicbiochemicalchangeswerealsofoundtobeassociatedwiththeseanimals.Indeed,plasmatotalproteins,ureaandglucoseconcentrationswereincreasedincontrastthetriglycerideconcentrationsweresignificantlyloweredandcholesterolconcentrationsslightlyreduced.nbsp;ThesedataclearlydemonstratethebeneficialeffectsofyeastsupplementationondigestiveprocessesindairycowsrearedunderAlgerianconditions.However,theinvolvedmechanismsonruminalmetabolicactivities,onlipidandonnitrogenmetabolismsremaintobeinvestigated.
