Socio-economic determinants of milk production in Bangladesh: an implication on on-farm water use

Thisstudyenvisagedtounderstandthesocio-economicfactorsthataffectmilkproductionandon-farmbluewateruse(OBWU).Thecrosssectionaldatasetscollectedfrom220sampledairyfarmsweremodeledbyusingtwoseparateregressionmodels.Firstly,agenerallinearmodel(GLM)wasusedtoexplorethefactorsthatinfluencemilkproduction.Secondly,OBWU(categorizedaslow,mediumandhigh)wasregressedbyusingamultinomiallogit(MNL)modeltoidentifysocio-economicdeterminantsofOBWU.TheGLMresultsrevealedthatageoffarmowner,off-farmincomeandtraininghadanegativeinfluence,whileexperienceinfarmingactivitieshavepositiveimpactonmilkproduction.TheMNLregressionresultsrevealedthatgenderofthefarmowner(men),education,experience,milkyield,andherdsizehadasignificantpositiveinfluenceonOBWU,andtheincreasingageoffarmownerandoff-farmincomehadanegativesignificantimpactonOBWUlevel.Itisconcludedthatsocio-economicfactorsaffectingmilkproductionandOBWUarehighlylinkedwithadoptionofefficientmanagementdecisiontoolsthatwillguidethefarmerstoallocatewaterresourceseffectivelyforincreasingmilkproduction.
