Prevalence and financial losses associated with bovine fasciolosis at Lyantonde Town abattoir

AstudywasdonetodeterminetheprevalenceofbovinefasciolosisanditsassociatedfinanciallossesinthecattleslaughteredatLyantondeTownAbattoirbyexaminingthebovinelivers.Outofthe260liversexamined,35.8%wereinfested.Oftheliversinfested29%,30%and41%wereseverely,moderatelyandmildlyinfestedrespectively.Oftheinfestedlivers25%weretotallycondemnedwhile75%werepartiallycondemned.Therewasahighlysignificant(X2=9.75;P=0.0018)prevalenceoffasciolosisinfemales(50%,n=52)thanmales(30.7%,n=48).Therewasahighlysignificant(X2=4.7;P=0.031)moreprevalenceoffasciolosisinadults(44.8%;n=60)thansub-adults.Steershadlessprevalenceoffasciolosisthananyotheragegroup(P0.01).Therewashigherprevalence(X2=23;P=,0.001)andgreaterseverity(X2=9.6P=0.0024)offasciolosisinexoticthanlocalcattlebreeds.Therewasgreaterseverityoffasciolosisincowsthananyotherage-sexgroup.Duringthe44daysstudyperiod,103kgofliverwerecondemnedwhichwereequivalentto330USDollarslostduringthestudyperiodthatwasextrapolatedtoUSD2703annually.Thestudyrecommendedthatfarmersshouldadoptpropermethodsofcontrollingfasciolosiswhichincluderegularde-wormingofcattlewithcorrectdosesandregime;anduseofmolluscidestokillsnailsinthebreedingplaceswherecattlegraze.
