Utilization of local trees and shrubs for sustainable livestock production in the Talensi-Nabdam District of the Upper East Region of Ghana

ThestudywascarriedouttoinvestigatetheindigenousknowledgeoflivestockfarmersintheutilizationoflocaltreesandshrubsforfeedingandmeetingthehealthneedsoflivestockintheTalensi-NabdanDistrictduringtheperiodsofDecember2005toJanuary2006.Eighty(80)householdsfromeight(8)communitieswereselectedforthestudy.nbsp;Datawascollectedthroughtheuseofsemi-structuredquestionnaireandobservation.Inall31speciesoftreesandshrubswereusedbyfarmersinfeedingandmedicationoflivestock.Acaciaalbida,FicusgnaphalocarpaandMangiferaindicawerethetreesmostusedforfeedingwhilstCeibapentandra,Cactusspp,Vetexdoninana,Bosciasengalensis,Securitacalongepedunculata,Acacianiloticass,KhayasenegalensisandVitellariaparadoxawereusedmostlyfortreatingdifferentailmentsinanimals.Effortsatconservingthesetreesandshrubswereencouragingsince66.25%oftherespondentsestablishedandmanagedsomeofthesetreesandshrubsaroundtheirhomesforlivestockfeedingandothermulti-purposeuse.Inconclusion,farmershadadequateknowledgeintheusefortreesandshrubasfeedandmedicationforlivestock.Morefarmersshouldbeencouragedtocultivatethesetreesandshrubstoavoidextinctionofpalatabletreesforsustainableuse.nbsp;
