Thesustainabilityassessmentshouldfollowanapproachthatintegratesthesocial,environmental,technicalandeconomiccomponentsofproductionsystems.Foritsrealizationitisnecessarytohavedifferentindicatorsthatsummarizeandquantifythecomponentsofsustainability(social,economic,technicalandenvironmental),focusingitinthiscaseforspecializeddairy.Thisreviewincludesdefinitionsofsustainabilityofproductionsystemsanddiscussestheusefulnessoftheseindicatorsfortheevaluationofagroecosystemsandforgeneratingpublicpolicies.Itdiscussesthecurrentweaknessesintermsofthelackofspecificmethodologiesandtransparentcriteriafortheselectionofindicators,whichcanunderminethecredibilityandsustainabilityassessmentscanleadtomakingwrongdecisions.Itisconcludedthatthegenerationofsustainabilityindicatorsforspecializeddairyisunderconstructionandagreaterresearcheffortmustbedevotedtothistopic.
