Coprological prevalence of bovine fascioliasis, its epidemiology and economic significance in Chittagong district, Bangladesh

Thestudywasaimedtodeterminetheprevalenceoffascioliasis,itsassociatedriskfactorsandeconomicsignificanceincattleinChittagongdistrict,Bangladesh.Faecalsamplesfrom283cattlewereexaminedmicroscopicallyusingdirectsmearandsedimentationmethodsandepidemiologicalandproductiondatawerecollectedusingapre-setquestionnaire.nbsp;TheoverallcoprologicalprevalenceoffascioliasisinChittagongwas14.8%.Theprevalenceoffascioliasiswasfoundtobesignificantlyassociatedwithage,sexandbreedasrevealedbythemultivariateanalysisofriskfactors.Theinfectionratewashigherinmalesthaninfemales.Adultcattleseemedtobemoreinfectedthantheiryoungercounterpartsandwithinbreed,localzebutypeRedChittagongcattleshowedmoreresistancetoFasciolainfectionthanthecrossbredcattle.Therewasalso17.0%reductioninmilkproductioninFasciolapositivelactatingcowsrearedinhouseholdbasedsemi-intensivefarmingcondition.Theresultfromthisstudydenotesthatfurthersurveysshouldbecarriedouttostrengthentheresultandalsoforabetterunderstandingontheepidemiologyofbovinefascioliasisinthestudyarea.
