Paddyfieldsqualifyasruminantfeedresourcesastheyproducericestrawandweeds.Themainobjectivesofthepresentstudyweretoevaluatetheproductivityandnutrientpotentialofriceweedsasruminantfeed.TheresearchwasconductedinNovember2011andJanuary2012inthreelowlanddistricts,Karawang,Brebes,andGresik,andthreeuplanddistricts,Cianjur,KaranganyarandMalang,ontheislandofJava,Indonesia.Theweedswerecollectedincultivatedpaddyfields,fallowsandonpaddyfieldbunds.Weedbiomassinuplandareaswaslargestonbundsasaresultofintensiveweedcontrolinpaddyfields.Inthelowlandsmostweedbiomasswasonfallows.Freshweedbiomassinthefirstricegrowingseason(afterdryseason)yielded891#8211;2369g/m2.Nutrientcontentrevealedaproportion(%inDM)ofcrudeproteinbetween12.6and17.9%,crudefiberbetween34.1and42.2,andcrudefat0.8and1.2%.Thus,riceweedshaveconsiderablepotentialasruminantfeed.
