Anexperimentwasconductedinthedryseason(FebruarytoMarch2013)involvingtentreatmentsarrangedina2*5factorialarrangementofarandomblockdesignwith2replications.Thefirstfactorwaslevelofbiochar(0and4kg/m2);thesecondfactorwaslevelofeffluentfrombiodigester(0,2.5,5.0,7.5and10kgN/ha).nbsp;Theareaofeachplotwas1.6m2(2.0mlengthx0.8mwidth)withspacingbetweeneachplotof0.5m.Theexperimentlasted40days.Thebiocharwasfromapaddyricedrier(combustiontemperaturewithricehusksasfeedstockwasabout500°C).ForalllevelsofeffluentNapplication,theadditionofbiocharledtomorethantwo-foldincreasesinabovegroundbiomassyield.Biocharhadnoeffectonbiomassyieldintheabsenceofeffluent,andtherewerenofurtherresponsestoeffluentNwhenthisexceededalevelof2.5kgN/ha.Biocharincreasedthecrudeproteinintheleavesbyanaverageof16%,withtherelativeincreasebeinggreaterwheneffluentwasapplied.Areductionincrudefibercontentoftheleavesduetobiocharwasnbsp;observedatlowlevels(5kgN/ha)ofapplicationofeffluentN,withtheoppositeeffectbeingapparentatlevelsofNof7.5and10kg/ha.
