ForageBrassicaspp.havehighqualityanddigestibility.Itisimportanttodefinethenutritivequalityandfattyacid(FA)profileofthistypeofcropduringgrowth.ThequalityofBrassicaforagechangesaccordingtoitsgrowthstageandanunderstandingofitsevolutionwouldenablecuttingtimestobeplanned,inordertooptimiseforageutilisationandtoidentifynewsourcesofFAsforherbivores.Ouraimwastostudychangesinthechemicalcomposition,invitrodrymatterdigestibility(IVDMD)andneutraldetergentfibredigestibility(IVNDFD),grossenergy,andFAprofileofRavizzone(RAV)(BrassicacampestrisL.var.Oleifera)seedsandplantsamplescollectedfromthevegetativethroughtotheripeningstage.nbsp;TheevolutionofRAVqualityduringgrowthischaracterisedbyaprogressivedecreaseincrudeproteinandIVDMDandanincreaseindrymatterandfibrousfractions,whilethelowestvalueofIVNDFDwasreachedatthebudstage.ThemainFAsoftheplantduringgrowthwere:#945;-linolenicacid(ALA,C18:3n-3),linoleicacid(LA,C18:2n-6),cis-10heptadecenoicacid(C17:1),andpalmiticacid(PA,C16:0).ThemostabundantFAsintheseedwereoleicacid(OA,C18:1n-9),LA,ALAandPA.nbsp;ThechemicalcompositionandFAprofileofRAViscloselyconnectedwiththedevelopmentoftheplant.AforagewithgoodnutritivevalueisstillobtainedevenwhenharvestingRAVattheflowerstage.
