Forage intake in Holstein cows during the early peripartum

ToestimateforageintakeinHolsteincowsduringearlyperipartum,12cowswereenrolledinsecondlactation,withanaveragebodyweight(BW)of629±54kgandbodycondition(GCC)3.5±0.2,whosebasaldietconsistedofgrazingkikuyugrass(CenchrusclandestinusHoechst.exChiov,Morrone)offered3.5kgDMper100kgofPVandconcentratedsupplement(2.0and4.0kg,duringtheantepartumperiodandpostpartum,respectively).TheestimateofconsumptionPrairiewasbasedontheninthdaybeforetheduedateuntiltheseventhdaypostpartum,usingtwoestimationmethods:agronomicdifference(DA)usingthetechniqueofdescendinglightdiskandusingthemodeldescribedbyNRC(2001)fortransitioncows.TheestimatedforageintakebyDA(kgDM/day)decreasedondays1,5and6postpartum,leadingtoalowerefficiencyutilizationPrairiebytheseanimals(P0.004).Theaverageestimatedforageintakeunderbothmethodswassimilar(8.26±1.14and8.39±2.45kgDM/dayforDAandNRC,respectively)(p0.52).Theresultsobtainedundertheconditionsofthisexperimentindicatethatdrymatterintakeinperiparturientcowsissignificantlyreducedaftercalving.
