Effect of age and season on semen traits and serving capacity of Pelibuey rams under tropical conditions

Theobjectiveofthisstudywastoevaluatetheeffectofagenbsp;oftheramandseasonoftheyearonscrotalcircumference,sementraitsandservingcapacity.SixPelibueyramswereallocatedtotwoagegroups:young(n=3;9.2±0.3months)andadult(n=3;34±6.9months).Ramswereejaculatedonceaweek,duringfall(September-December)andwinter(December-March),andsemenevaluated.Also,servicecapacityoftheramsweretestedduring10minutes.Scrotalcircumference(SC)wasevaluatedeachmonth.Dataonresponsevariableswereanalyzedusinganalysisofvariancewithorwithoutrepeatedmeasures,wherethefixedeffectswerebreed,seasonandtheinteractionbreedxseason.nbsp;Therewasnobreedxseasoninteractioneffect(P0.05)foralltraits.AgeandseasonhadeffectsonSC,spermconcentrationandindividualmotility(P0.05).Agehadalsoeffectontimeatfirstmating(P0.05).Inconclusion,mostofthetraitsstudiedwereinfluencedbyageandseasonoftheyear;theseresultsmayallowtotakebetterdecisionsinthemanagementtoimprovereproductiveperformanceofPelibueyrams.
