Use of local ducklings to control insect pests and weeds in the growing rice field

AnexperimentwasconductedonasmallholderfarminOmondistrictintheMekongDeltatoevaluatetheabilityandefficiencyoflocalducklingsincontrollingdamagesfrominsectpestsandweedsinthegrowinghighyieldingricefield.Thetrialincluded4treatmentsallocatedatrandomin4blocks,eachof33*210m,inadirectseededricearea.Thetreatmentswere:(1)riceareamanagedwithcompletechemical(CtrP),(2)riceareafertilizedwith50%ofthenitrogenappliedtoCCplusducks(DU-N/2),(3)riceareawithonlyduckswithoutanychemicals(DUO),and(4)riceareawithoutanychemicalsorducks(CtrN).Theduckswereintroducedintothegrowingriceplotsattwoweeksofagewhenthericehadbeenseededfor22daysandremovedat52dayswhentheplantsstartedflowering.Amashofbrokenriceandfishmealwassupplementedtotheducksthroughoutthegrowthcycle.Thericeyieldswere4,240,3,888,2,176,and496kgperhectare(P0.05)fortheCtrlP,DU-N/2,DUOandCtrNtreatments,nbsp;respectively.Duckmortalityduringtheexperimentwaszero.nbsp;Weightsat63dayswere1,313and1,300fortheDUN/2andDUtreatments,nbsp;respectively.TheneteconomicbenefitswerehighestfortheDUN/2treatment.
