Broodstock size combination in artificial spawning of cultured Clarias gariepinus

Theexperimentwasaimedatdeterminingtheeffectofvaryingbroodstockweightincrossesonfecundity,fertilizationandhatchabilityofClariasgariepinusunderhatcheryconditions.Broodstockusedforthepresentstudywereobtainedfromahomogenoussource(Age:Oneyearandthreemonths).Combinationsofbroodstocksusedforthestudywerewithinsizeranges:200-300g(A),400-500g(B),600-700g(C)and800-900g(D).ItwasobservedthatbroodstockcombinationinvolvingDfemaleshadthehighestfecundity(61700.0-74100.0),fertilization(77.3%-83.7%),andhatchability(74.4%-88.7%).Ofallthecrosses,smallersizehomogeneitydidnotfavourfertilizationandhatchability.DxDhadthebesthatchability(88.7%).Generally,thestudyobservedthatfecundity,testesmass,fertilization,andhatchabilityincreasedsignificantlyasthesizeofbroodstockincreased.ThereforeforbetterhatchingsuccessininducedbreedingofClariasgariepinus,largerbroodstockareadvisedtobeused.
