Itwashypothesizedthattheagro-ecologicalzoneinwhichvillageindigenouschickenswerefarmedinfluencedthelevelofdiseasesoccurrence.nbsp;Onehundredandfortyfourapparentlyhealthychickens(71fromlowerhighland1,acoldzoneand73fromlowermidland5,ahotzone)wererandomlysampled.Oro#8211;pharyngealandcloacalswabswerecollectedfromeachbirdandprocessedforvirusisolationin10-12dayoldembryonatedchickeneggs.Inaddition,blood,withoutanticoagulantwasobtainedfromeachbirdthroughwingvenipuncture.Haemagglutinationinhibitionassaywasperformedforallserasamples.nbsp;PrevalenceofNewcastledisease(NDV)viruswassignificantlyhigher(17.8%)inthedryhotzone(lowermidland5)comparedtothecoolwetzone(lowerhighland1)at9.9%showingevidenceforclimateasariskfactorintheoccurrenceofNDVinvillagechicken.FemalebirdshadhighermeanNewcastlediseaseviraltitersthantheirmalecounterparts.AllNewcastlediseasevirusisolatesrecoveredwerefromhealthyappearingbirdsandwereallvelogenic.Sero-prevalencewassignificantlyhighest(p0.05)inadultbirds(10%)whilegrowershad5.1%andchicks2.9%.Apparentlyhealthy-appearingbirdswerereportedtobereservoirsofvelogenicNewcastlediseasevirusstrainsthatcouldinitiateendemicityNDVcyclesinthevillagesetting.
