Thisstudywascarriedoutfor21daystodeterminetheimpactoftreatingpeanut(Arachishypogea)husk,aneconomicallyimportantcashcropinNigeriawithwhiterotfungi:PleurotusostreatusandPleurotuspulmonarius,andtheresultingimpactonthechemicalcompositionandinvitrodigestibility.nbsp;Solidstatefermentationimprovedthecrudeprotein(CP)from7.39%(control,UM)to9.29%forPleurotusostreatus(POT)and16.10%forPleurotuspulmonarius(PPT).Onthecontrary,fungaltreatmentdepletedthecrudefiber(CF)from26.2%inUMto16.9%forPOTand18.7%forPPT.Inasimilartrend,thefungaltreatmentincreasedsignificantly(p0.05)theneutraldetergentfiberandaciddetergentfiber.Widevariationswerealsoobservedinthemineralcontentsofthesubstratesunderstudywithhighervalueobtainedinallthemajormineralswiththeexceptionofsodium.However,copper(Cu)wasobservedtobehigherinthetreatedsubstratescomparedwiththeuntreated.Fungaltreatmentincreasedtheiron(Fe)contentofPOT.Thefermentationoftheinsolublefraction(b)increasedconsistentlyfrom34.33mLinthecontrolto50.67mLforPOTand53.33mL.Fasterratesofgasproductionwerealsoobservedinthetreatedpeanuthuskcomparedwiththeuntreated.Gasvolumewassignificantlyhigheratallincubationperiodinthefungaltreatedsubstrates.Theestimatedmetabolisableenergy(ME),organicmatterdigestibility(OMD)andshortchainfattyacid(SCFA)alsoincreasedwithfungaltreatment.nbsp;Theresultsofthisstudyindicatethatfungaltreatmentofpeanuthuskhavethepotentialtobeusedasfeedsupplementsforruminantsespeciallyduringthedryseasonwhenfeedstuffsarelackingandtheonlyavailablefeedstuffsarecropresidues.
