Typology of dairy production systems in the Eastern Amazon, Pará, Brazil

ThisstudyaimedtocharacterizedairyproductionsystemsintheEasternAmazonstateofPará,Brazil.Thedatawerecollectedusingquestionnairesto112dairyfarmerslocatedinthesoutheasternandnortheasternmesoregionsofthestate.nbsp;AtypologywasestablishedusingaFactorAnalysis(FA)methodthatidentifiedfourfactorsaccountingfor66.99%ofthevarianceintheoriginalvariablesandaclusteranalysis(CA)thatidentifiedfourgroupsoffarmers.nbsp;GroupsIandIIwerecharacterizedasfamilyfarmswithlowskilllevelsandlowproductivity.GroupIIIcorrespondedtofarmersthatexhibitedgreatertechnologyadoption,includingfeedsupplementation,healthmanagement,milkingtechnologyandactivitymanagement,consequentlyinducingbetterperformance,whoachievedproductivitylevelsof5.05(L/cow/day).GroupIVconsistedoffamilyfarmerswhoproducemilkandgrowagriculturalproductsatsmallerscalesandwithlowereconomicreturns.nbsp;Thisstudyemphasizedthatfarmereducationlevelindicatesgreaterpotentialfortechnologyinnovationadoption.Ingeneral,productionsystemswithhigher-levelmanagementaremorecompetitiveandachievebetterresultscomparedtothosethatdonotadopttechnologies.
