AstudyofvoluntaryintakeandtheinvivodigestibilityofPennisetumpurpureumassociatetoonelegumeforage(A.glabrata,C.calothyrsusorD.intortum)asproteinsourceforguineapigswasconductedbetweenFebruaryandMay2014attheTeachingandExperimentalFarmand,AnimalfeedingandnutritionlaboratoryofUniversityofDschang.Toevaluatethefeedintakeandinvivodigestibilityofnutrients,thetrialwasorganizedaccordingtofactorialdesign(dietandanimalsex)intofourgroupsof5malesand5femaleseachforatotalof40guineapigsagedof5monthsandweighingaveragely450±50g.ThecontrolgroupPPreceivedP.purpureumadlibitumassociatedto60g/day/animalofmixedfoodonlyandanimalsofgroupsPP-AG,PP-CCandPP-DIreceived60g/day/animalofamixedfoodcontainingrespectivelyArachisglabrata,CalliandracalothyrsusorDesmodiumintortum.nbsp;TheresultsofthisstudyshowedthatproteinsourcehasnoeffectonfoodintakeanddigestibilityofP.purpureum,drymatter(DM),organicmatter(OM)andcrudeprotein(CP)nomatterthesex.ThehighestvaluesoffoodintakewereobtainedfromanimalsofthegroupPP-AGforP.purpureum(24.6gMS/day/animal),organicmatter(41.0gMS/day/animal)andcrudefiber(12.9gMS/day/animal)and,thoseofgroupPP-CCformixedfood(23.0gMS/day/animal),drymatter(46.9gMS/day/animal)andcrudeprotein(7.32gMS/day/animal).ThehighestvaluesofapparentdigestibilityoftheDM(55.6%),CP(74.9%)andCF(58.0%)wereobtainedfromanimalsofgroupPP-AG;thedietcontainingC.calothyrsuspermittedtoobtainthehighestvalueoforganicmatterdigestibility(0M)(57.2%).MaleshadhigherintakesofDM,OM,CPandCFcomparedtofemaleswiththetreatmentPP-AG.Fortheothertreatmentstherewerenodifferencesbetweenmalesandfemalesfornbsp;DMintakeandapparentdigestibility.Forweightgainandcaecalfloracomposition,nodifferencewasobservedamongdifferenttreatments.LegumesforagesofthistrialcanthenbeusedasproteinsourcestoimprovefeedintakeanddigestibilityinguineapigsfedPennisetumpurpureumasthebasaldiet.
